Find out how artificial intelligence works and how you can talk to your students about it.
What is aI?
Artificial Intelligence
Machine Learning
To achieve artificial intelligence, we start with a lot of data and use machine learning to train the program to recognize patterns and make connections so that eventually it will be able to make predictions.
These include programs that perform simpler tasks such as classifying images, conduct spam filtering and recommending products.

Deep Learning
Sometimes AI programs contain an even more complex form of machine learning called deep learning with more sophisticated techniques for understanding the data at a deeper level.
This includes programs that perform more complex tasks such as self-driving cars, facial recognition, and medical image analysis.

Generative AI
Generative AI is a more complex form of deep learning that creates original data or content.
Examples of generative AI are programs that generate art or music based on a given description.

Artificial Intelligence = a bakery’s goal to produce the perfect chocolate chip cookies.
Generative AI -
???
Machine Learning
This would be like the kitchen - using tools (programming) and ingredients (data) to create the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
Deep Learning
This would be the kitchens that have specialized ovens that is able to analyze the cookies in the oven so carefully that it can adjust to things like the number of cookies in the oven or even number of chocolate chips in the cookie
Generative AI
This would be the kitchens that have an even MORE specialized oven creates brand new original cookies based on the ingredients placed inside.
Instagram uses machine learning to determine which content is most relevant to each user based on their past interactions with the app. This includes things like the accounts they follow, the posts they like, and the hashtags they use.
Smartspeakers
You ask Google Home or Alexa a question and it uses natural language processing to recognize your voice and interpret your voice commands.
They also use machine learning to improve their peformance by learning your routines and preferences.
sPOTIFY/PANDORA
These music streaming services collects data on your listening habits and uses machine learning to predict what you will like and dislikes. In addition, these services also utilize natural language processing to search for songs based on title, lyrics and artist even if they are not entirely accurate -- the AI is able to infer what the user is requesting.
MINECRAFT
Some video games such as Minecraft use AI so that the game enemies adapt to situations based on the players’ decisions. This creates dynamic and unpredictable experiences, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting for kids.
HOT TOPICS: Benefits
Personalized Learning - AI programs can create tailored educational experiences based on individual strengths and needs
Generates Ideas and Content - Experiencing writer’s block? Don’t know where to even begin with a task? AI can help you with these things by generating ideas and breaking down large tasks into smaller chunks.
Provide 24/7 support - If a teacher is not around, chatbots on educational sites might be able to help students with questions at any time.
Creates Engaging Experiences - Within game settings, AI can adjust based on players’ decisions and choices, thus making gaming experiences more engaging and unique to the player.
HOT TOPICS: risks

HOT TOPICS: Biases and tech
Start the conversation now.
Students need to know about these biases so they can be critical about the information they are absorbing. Here are some starters:
Tech is created by humans and therefore also carries our implicit and explicit biases. AI may perpetuate biases especially with respect to race and gender. In addition, the tech is not perfect and makes mistakes. It may give inaccurate information and even fabricate sources.**
How can I address this with my student?
**Note: ChatGPT has a lack of knowledge for data and events after 2021 (when its training ended) so anything it write about after 2021 is inaccurate.
HOT TOPICS: plagirism & cheating
Many popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini generate text and images, which kids might want to use for schoolwork. Using AI tools verbatim without the expressed consent of the teacher and/or without proper citation, may result in serious academic offense. In addition, students who rely on AI to complete their academic assignments may find that it hinders their ability to apply these skills on their own without the use of AI.
How can I address this with my student?
Start the conversation now! AI can be a powerful tool for generating ideas however it is crucial that we are having conversations with students about how to use AI ethically and responsibly. If students are struggling with an assignment, they should seek help from their teachers instead of passing off AI’s work as their own.
HOT TOPICS: Protect your privacy
I’m concerned about my student’s privacy. The more students interact with chatbots and other AI programs, the more information is being collected about them and there is no one-size-fits all answer to what, data is being collected, how it’s being used and with who it is being shared.
How can I address this with my student?
What you can do, is to make sure you are reviewing the program’s data privacy policies and talking with your student to ensure they are not sharing any personal information on the internet.
